Game, Set...Match! BCPS Students Hit the Court to Learn Tennis

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students are grabbing their rackets and serving up fun thanks to a new partnership with the Sloane Stephens Foundation. Through this collaboration, the Foundation is providing tennis instructors and equipment to selected schools for lessons during physical education classes – at no cost to the District or schools.

Sloane Stephens, who was born in Broward County, is a champion tennis player who ranked #3 in the world and won the U.S. Open in 2017. She established her foundation to help shape constructive futures for youth by providing enhanced educational opportunities and encouraging health and wellness through tennis education.

In the first phase of the three-year agreement, seven District schools are introducing tennis lessons through coordination with the BCPS Applied Learning Department: Collins Elementary School, Driftwood Elementary School, Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale K–8, Lake Forest Elementary School, Mary M. Bethune Elementary School, Sanders Park Elementary School and Silver Palms Elementary School. Additional schools will be added as funding permits.

The tennis effort was spearheaded by District 1 School Board Member Maura McCarthy Bulman.

“This partnership is about more than learning a sport, it is about giving our students opportunities to build confidence, stay active and develop new skills for lifelong fitness,” Bulman said. “I thank our entire School Board for supporting this initiative, which will positively impact students across our District. We are excited to bring tennis into our schools and appreciate the Sloane Stephens Foundation for investing in our students.”
